Opportunities

"Human beings have an innate inner drive to be autonomous, self-determined, and connected to one another. And when that drive is liberated, people achieve more and live richer lives."

From Daniel Pink’s Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us.

I have heard a number of friends unemployed recently. Smart, talented, genuinely likeable, and delightful to work with people. It’s part of why I did last week’s AI Powered Job Hunt workshop.

It can be a terrifying time. I remember feeling angry that something I poured my heart and soul into could just dismiss me so easily. Your identity is so tied up in work too. But having been through it many times in my life (I worked in aerospace which is notorious for layoffs and through the dotcom bubble where I got hired and let go in 8 months along with the whole tech team.) I have noticed 3 things.

1.     I always landed somewhere better

2.     All but one job I ever got hired for, I got through people I know

3.     The gap in your work history is not the end of the world, but rather a huge gift.

Embrace the current challenge of unemployment as a springboard towards aligning your career with your core passions. First, identify what lights your fire. Ask yourself what activities absorb you completely or what societal issues tug at your heartstrings.

Action Steps:

1.      Network intentionally in your desired field.

2.      Engage in relevant volunteer work or build something yourself to sell

3.      Upgrade your skills to fit your dream job’s needs.

My main point is forge ahead with optimism. The intersection of passion and profession isn't just a dream—it's achievable. Embrace this journey, and let your genuine interests guide your path to meaningful work. Keep pushing; your next big break is closer than you think.
