Are you in sync?

  • Rose Thun

Hello!

If you are making a decision about a life change, I write a lot about getting clear for yourself about what you’re aiming for. But are you also in sync with your sweetheart about most things?

As you and your significant other think about where and how to live, I’d recommend making your lists independently, and then comparing notes after. There will surely be some things where you are not in sync, but it’s helpful to know where you may need to negotiate. It might surprise you that your sweetheart doesn’t agree.

Riffing on a recent article https://www.investmentnews.com/how-retirement-coaching-can-add-value-to-your-practice-65761 with questions for couples approaching retirement, a good start to thinking about your ideal life together would be to uncover what your typical day might look like. Many of these questions work for single people too.

·        What is the honest assessment of the state of our relationship?

·        How should our daily routine and chores be if we’re both at home?

·        What is on my bucket list? What is on your bucket list? What is on our bucket list?

·        What’s our lifestyle going to look like?

·        Are we going to have breakfast and lunch and dinner together?

·        Will either of us work in retirement? How much of the time? From home, from an office?

·        Where will we live?

·        Do we expect to be supporting others and if so how and how much?

·        What are our big expenses?

·        What are priorities we each want to do regularly?

·        How often will we travel? Who will we travel with? Where? For how long typically?

·        How often will we see family and friends? Where, when, for how long typically?

·        What feels like enough, what feels too extravagant or too impoverished?

Hope it helps.

Best wishes,

Rose
